What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic?

Porcelain is a type of ceramic. Their difference has to do with raw materials, production process, and technical characteristics.

Porcelain tile is made with slightly different raw materials that allow for it to be pressed at a higher pressure than normal ceramic tiles, resulting in a denser, more durable tile. Ceramic tiles are pressed at a lower pressure but are still very durable. Both porcelain and ceramic tiles are fired in a kiln at high temperatures so that they harden.

Porcelain is waterproof and can be installed pretty much anywhere—even outdoors. Ceramics are water resistant, but not recommended for outdoor or heavy commercial applications.
