    SUBSTRATE

Tile must be installed over a suitable substrate to insure a proper installation. Glass tile should be installed over a clean, sound, and flat surface, free of contaminates including curing compounds. Substrate should be free of cracks. If used in a wet area you must waterproof. See manufacturer’s recommendation on a membrane for crack and water protection that is compatible with the setting material you are using. Glass is reflective therefore any inconsistencies in the substrate will result in a poor installation. For pools and fountains we recommend installing a mortar bed according to TCA P601-98. EXPANSION AND CONTROL JOINTS PER TCA EJ171-05 Expansion joints should be installed at all “changes in plane” in the tile work and where tile abuts restraining surfaces, therefore silicone caulking sealant must be installed in all corner joints in place of grout.

    INSTALLATION
    • To avoid affecting the color of glass tile, White modified thin-set is recommended for all installations.
    • Apply thin-set using a trowel as recommended by the manufacturer.
    • Apply as much adhesive as can be covered within 10-15 minutes.
    • Grout joint should be a minimum of 1/16” and not butt set.
    • The trowel size you can use is a 9" Trowel - 1/16" square notch.
    GROUTING
    • Grout joints should be packed full and free of voids and pits.
    • Clean excess grout as the work progresses before it has hardens completely.
    • Acids should never be used for cleaning grout haze.
    • Use a damp sponge for the final cleaning and to smooth out the grout joints.
    • It is recommended to use non-sanded grout.
    • Highly recommended to purchase the Glass Installation/Maintenance Kit - http://www.TileBar.com/collection/tiling-supplies/glass-tile-maintenance-package.html
    CUTTING

The recommended cutting method is to use a wet saw with a diamond blade that is specifically for cutting glass. Edges can be sanded smooth after cutting.

I chose this tile because it looks unusual and reflects light. I hope it will help to light up my dark kitchen. I will update you once we've installed it.

Is this tile durable enough to be used as a boarder on a bathroom floor?
    A shopper on Feb 9, 2015
Best Answer: I have not installed the tile on a floor. However, It depends on what you mean by border on the floor. If you are talking about something that will be only a few inches wide and because it is close to the wall not really trod upon on a regular basis, I think that they would be fine. If the border were much wider and there would be a lot of foot traffic on it, I think that you'd find the tiles getting scratched over time. Note that these are not actually mother of pearl, but glass tiles that give a very excellent simulation of MOP. So even though they are much harder than real MOP, they will still scratch with heavy use. Again, if this is for a guest bath that will see very light use, perhaps even using them in traffic areas might be okay. Sorry I do not have a more definitive answer for you.

Can this tile be used in a shower niche?
    A shopper on Feb 24, 2015
Best Answer: I don't see why not. However, note that the tile is very thin, it is not as thick as standard tiles that would be used in a bathroom. Therefore, you should take extra care to ensure you have the proper subsurface for a shower application like cement board or Schluter system. Ensure you use an unsanded grout with this tile and get in all the very small crevices to keep water out.

What size of v-notch trowel would you recommend with that mini brick tile?
    Sophie K on Feb 2, 2015
Best Answer: While I am an avid DIYer, I opted to hire an installer to put up my backsplash. I had no experience with tile installation so reasoned that it would be better for me to hire this one out. I don't regret that decision and the final product looks fabulous...we have gotten so many compliments on it. If I recall the installer told me he would be using a 3/8" trowel and even then would be applying the glue with the trowel at an angle so as to not apply too much adhesive. The tile is very thin and light weight so not a lot of glue is necessary to keep it in place. And too much glue would result in a lot of cleanup in a limited timeframe...I think he mentioned about 20 minutes before the adhesive starts to set up. As I mentioned the finished product is wonderful and the installer was really surprised at how low the purchase price was, so thanks Tile Bar for helping make our kitchen remodel a huge success.
